ButterKnife LLC
Last Updated February 1, 2026
Effective Date February 1, 2026
ButterKnife LLC (“ButterKnife,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides a browser extension and related websites, applications, and services (collectively, the “Digital Properties”) that allow users to manage, control, and—if they choose—sell their own search history and related browsing-derived data to other users through a peer-to-peer marketplace (the “Marketplace”).
Important: ButterKnife is a marketplace for selling search history. If you choose to sell Search History Data, it will be disclosed to Buyers and may include sensitive information. Deleting your account does not automatically delete data that has already been delivered to Buyers.
This Privacy Policy explains how ButterKnife collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you access or use our Digital Properties. By accessing or using the Digital Properties, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Digital Properties.
If you accept this Privacy Policy on behalf of an organization, you represent that you are authorized to do so. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TERMS OF THIS PRIVACY POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT ACCESS THE APPLICATION.
We reserve the right to make changes to this Privacy Policy at any time and for any reason. We will alert you about any changes by updating the “Last updated” date of this Privacy Policy. You are encouraged to periodically review this Privacy Policy to stay informed of updates. You will be deemed to have been made aware of, will be subject to, and will be deemed to have accepted the changes in any revised Privacy Policy by your continued use of the Application after the date such revised Privacy Policy is posted.
This Privacy Policy applies to apps, websites, events, and other services operated by ButterKnife. This Privacy Policy does not apply to the third-party online/mobile store from which you install the Application or make payments, which may also collect and use data about you. We are not responsible for any of the data collected by any such third party.
1) Definitions
- “Seller” means a user (including an individual or business entity) who chooses to offer their Search History Data for purchase through the Marketplace.
- “Buyer” means a user (including an individual or business entity, such as an advertiser) who purchases Search History Data from a Seller through the Marketplace.
- “Search History Data” means the search queries and associated information captured or derived through the extension (for example, query text entered into a search box, including a URL typed into a search box, and the site/source associated with the query), subject to your configuration settings and permissions you grant.
Important: ButterKnife is designed so that Sellers can choose to disclose their Search History Data to Buyers. Disclosures that occur because you choose to sell or otherwise share data through the Marketplace are different from disclosures we make to our service providers (e.g., payment processing, analytics, advertising technology, and moderation tools).
ButterKnife does not purchase Search History Data from Sellers for resale; ButterKnife provides the Marketplace infrastructure and related services that enable Seller-to-Buyer transactions.
2) Information We Collect
We collect information in three primary ways: (a) information you provide, (b) information collected automatically, and (c) information collected through the extension based on your settings.
A. Information You Provide
Account and Profile Information. When you register, we may collect identifiers such as name, username, email address, phone number, and other profile details you provide. We require two-step verification to create an account and the Digital Properties are intended for users 18 and over.
Buyer-Facing Profiles. Buyers may be able to view Seller profile information in the Marketplace (for example, a username and other profile attributes Sellers choose or are required to display). Sellers may use a screen name in their public profile. ButterKnife may verify account information to help maintain trust and safety on the platform.
Support and Communications. If you contact us, we collect the content of your communications and any information you choose to provide.
B. Search History Data (Collected Through the Extension)
Our extension may collect Search History Data and link it to your account identity. This linking is an express feature of the Marketplace and is used to enable Buyers to purchase data associated with Seller profiles. Search History Data includes content from third-party platforms or services you authorize ButterKnife to access through the extension.
Your controls: During onboarding and in settings, you can choose which sites or sources ButterKnife may collect Search History Data from and which sites or sources ButterKnife will not collect from. If you exclude a site/source, ButterKnife will not collect Search History Data from that site/source through the extension. We may offer a “no restrictions” option.
C. Payment Information
Payment Information. ButterKnife uses Stripe as our payment processor to process payments and, where applicable, remit payouts. Payment card details and certain billing and payout information (such as billing address and, for Sellers, information needed to receive payouts) are collected and processed directly by Stripe in accordance with Stripe’s privacy policy. ButterKnife may receive limited payment-related information (for example, payment status, transaction identifiers, payout status, and partial card details such as last 4 digits) to administer accounts, process Marketplace transactions, handle disputes, and provide support. ButterKnife may change payment processors or use additional payment processors over time and will update this Privacy Policy as appropriate.
D. Automatically Collected Information (Website/App/Extension)
Device and Usage Data. We may collect information such as IP address, browser type, device identifiers, operating system, language, timestamps, pages/screens viewed, interactions, and similar usage data.
Cookies and Similar Technologies. We use cookies and similar technologies for authentication, session management, security, preferences, analytics, and advertising. Some cookies may be set at the browser level or by third parties (e.g., analytics and advertising partners).
Server Logs. Like most online services, our servers automatically record log data each time you access the Digital Properties. These logs may include your device’s IP address, browser and device information (such as user agent string, operating system, and browser type/version), date/time of access, pages viewed, and the referring URL. We use server logs to operate the Digital Properties, monitor and troubleshoot errors and incidents, analyze traffic, support security and fraud prevention, and optimize the user experience. Server logs may also capture Marketplace-related activity (e.g., login events, settings changes, listing/purchase requests) for security, auditing, and troubleshooting.
Analytics. We currently use Google Analytics and may evaluate other analytics or data tools over time. Our analytics may include measurement of Search History Data captured through the extension, including raw query text, to understand usage, improve performance, and support reporting. See Section 6 for additional advertising and opt-out information.

Targeted Advertising. We may engage in targeted advertising, which can involve collecting or receiving identifiers and browsing/activity signals to personalize ads and measure campaign performance.
We also collect activity and interaction data related to your use of the Marketplace (e.g., listings created, purchases made, settings changes, reports/flags submitted, and customer support interactions).
You may also opt out of certain interest-based advertising through industry programs such as the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) and the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI). Please note that opting out through cookies is browser and device specific; clearing cookies or using a different browser/device may reset your preferences.
3) Sensitive Information and Highly Sensitive Content
Search history is often sensitive because it can reveal personal interests and characteristics, including potentially health-related information (for example, searches for medical services such as “cardiologist”), political views, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, financial concerns, or other intimate details.
You control which sources are included or excluded from collection and/or sale, but if you choose to include sensitive Search History Data and sell it, you are choosing to disclose that information to Buyers.
4) How We Use Information
We use information for the following purposes:
A. Provide and Operate the Digital Properties
- Create and manage accounts
- Enable the extension’s functionality, including collecting Search History Data based on your settings
- Operate the Marketplace, including listing, purchase fulfillment, transaction records, and dispute handling
- Display Seller profiles and associated Marketplace information to Buyers as part of Marketplace functionality
B. Trust & Safety, Security, and Compliance
- Protect against fraud, abuse, prohibited content, and security incidents
- Enforce our Terms of Use, Marketplace rules, and other policies
- Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests
C. Content Moderation Using AI Tools
ButterKnife uses AI-assisted tools to help detect and prevent prohibited content from being added to or listed through the Marketplace (for example, attempts to upload or list content that violates our rules). ButterKnife currently uses OpenAI (and may evaluate other vendors) for moderation support.
No AI training. ButterKnife does not use your Search History Data to train ButterKnife AI models. ButterKnife also configures its use of AI vendors to avoid using your data for vendor training where available/contractually supported.
Important note: Even if an AI tool is “not connected” to our primary database, information may be submitted to the AI tool for moderation and returned with a decision (e.g., allow/reject). ButterKnife limits what is submitted to what is reasonably necessary for moderation.
D. Analytics and Product Improvement
- Understand usage, debug issues, and improve performance
- Develop and improve features and user experience
E. Advertising and Marketing
- ButterKnife does not currently run third-party targeted advertising on the Digital Properties. If we introduce advertising in the future, we may deliver and measure advertising, and may use information (which could include Search History Data) where permitted and subject to your settings and applicable law.
- Send administrative, transactional, and marketing communications (you can opt out of marketing emails)
5) How We Disclose Information
ButterKnife discloses information in the following ways:
A. Disclosures You Choose: Marketplace Sales/Transfers (Seller → Buyer)
ButterKnife operates the Marketplace as a platform that facilitates transfers of Search History Data from Sellers to Buyers at the Seller’s direction. If you are a Seller and choose to list or sell Search History Data through the Marketplace, ButterKnife will facilitate disclosure of the data you list/sell and related Seller profile details to the Buyer in order to complete the transaction. Buyers may include individuals or entities, including advertising companies or other commercial actors.
Important: Once a Buyer receives Search History Data, the Buyer’s use and storage of that data may be governed by (a) ButterKnife’s Terms of Use and Marketplace rules and (b) any agreement between Buyer and Seller. ButterKnife cannot guarantee that Buyers will not store, copy, redistribute, or further use data they purchase except as restricted by enforceable Marketplace rules, contract, and applicable law. ButterKnife does not foster, endorse, or encourage Buyers to screenshot, re-sell, or redistribute Search History Data outside the Marketplace, and ButterKnife cannot fully police misuse once data is displayed or delivered to a Buyer.
B. Service Providers (Processors)
ButterKnife shares information with vendors that help operate the Digital Properties, such as:
- Payment processing (Stripe)
- Cloud hosting and infrastructure
- Analytics providers (e.g., Google Analytics)
- Customer support tools
- Trust & safety / moderation tools (e.g., OpenAI or other vendors)
- Advertising technology partners (as applicable)
These vendors are authorized to access information only as needed to perform services for ButterKnife.
C. Advertising Partners
ButterKnife may, if applicable, share or receive information with advertising partners and measurement providers to deliver, personalize, and measure ads. This may involve cookies or similar technologies and can be considered “sharing” for targeted advertising under certain laws.
D. Business Transfers
If ButterKnife undergoes a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy, reorganization, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
E. Legal and Safety Disclosures
ButterKnife may disclose information to comply with law, protect rights, prevent fraud, and address security or safety issues.
6) Cookies, Analytics, and Targeted Advertising
A. Cookies
ButterKnife uses cookies and similar technologies to operate the service (e.g., keeping you logged in), maintain security, remember preferences, analyze usage, and support advertising. Your browser may allow you to manage cookies; blocking cookies may limit functionality.
B. Analytics
ButterKnife uses Google Analytics and may use additional analytics tools. Analytics providers may collect information such as IP address, device identifiers, browser type, pages visited, and interactions.
C. Targeted Advertising
ButterKnife may use targeted advertising. You may be able to opt out of certain targeted ads through:
- Device and browser settings
- Industry opt-out mechanisms where available
- Any in-product controls ButterKnife provides
If you are located in certain jurisdictions (e.g., California), you may have specific rights regarding “sale”/“sharing” for targeted advertising (see Section 10). ButterKnife does not currently run third-party targeted advertising on the Digital Properties. If we do in the future, ads may be tailored based on information associated with your use of the Digital Properties, subject to your settings and applicable law. This means ads you see may be tailored based on the searches and sources you include through your privacy settings.
7) Data Retention
ButterKnife retains information for as long as necessary to:
- Provide the Digital Properties and Marketplace
- Comply with legal obligations
- Resolve disputes
- Enforce agreements
- Maintain security and prevent abuse
Deletion timeline. If you request deletion of your account and/or Search History Data, ButterKnife will remove it from active systems and retain it for up to 30 days before permanent deletion from active systems, except where retention is required or permitted by law (e.g., transaction records, fraud prevention, compliance).
Backups. Deleted information may persist in backups and disaster recovery systems for a period of time. ButterKnife does not delete information from backups immediately. Backup data is not used for Marketplace operations and is accessed only if needed for recovery, security, or integrity purposes.
8) Your Choices and Controls
A. Marketplace Controls
- Choose which sites/sources are included or excluded from collection and/or sale
- Configure privacy settings that affect what can be listed or sold
- Choose whether and what to sell through the Marketplace
B. Communications
You can opt out of marketing emails by using the unsubscribe link or contacting ButterKnife. You may still receive transactional messages related to your account or Marketplace activity.
C. Cookies/Ads Controls
You can adjust cookie settings in your browser and manage ad personalization settings through platforms and tools where available.
- Account Information / Emails
- Access/update profile
- Control collection via site include/exclude
- Marketing opt-out
- Delete account (30-day retention; backups)
- Cookie controls / ad personalization
9) Account Deletion and Requests
You may request deletion of your account and associated data by:
- Using in-product deletion controls (if available), or
- Contacting ButterKnife at privacy@butterknife.ai with the subject line “Privacy Request.”
ButterKnife may need to verify your identity before processing certain requests. Deletion will occur according to Section 7.
Note: If you are a Seller and you sell Search History Data to a Buyer, deleting your account does not automatically delete data already delivered to Buyers, except as required by law or as enforceable through Marketplace rules.
Important: If you sold Search History Data, Buyers may retain copies. ButterKnife cannot retrieve or delete data already delivered to Buyers, except as required by law or as enforceable through Marketplace rules. If a Seller deletes their account, previously sold or subscribed Search History Data may remain accessible to Buyers within the Marketplace for up to 30 days, unless ButterKnife processes an immediate deletion request, where available.
10) U.S. State Privacy Rights (Including California)
Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal information, such as the right to request access to, deletion of, and correction of your personal information, and to opt out of certain processing.
A. “Sale” and “Sharing” / Targeted Advertising
Some state privacy laws (including California) define “sale” or “sharing” broadly. Even if ButterKnife does not sell personal data to third-party aggregators as a company practice, ButterKnife’s Marketplace enables user-directed disclosures (Seller → Buyer), which may be considered a “sale” under certain laws. ButterKnife also engages in targeted advertising, which may be considered “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising under certain laws.
Where required by applicable law, ButterKnife will provide methods to:
- Opt out of “sale” and/or “sharing” (as defined by applicable law)
- Opt out of targeted advertising where required
- Limit certain uses and disclosures of sensitive personal information, where applicable
Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control (GPC): Where required by law and technically feasible, ButterKnife will process opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control. We may update our practices and this Privacy Policy as our compliance program and technical implementation evolve.
ButterKnife’s use of Search History Data for targeted advertising and related disclosures to advertising technology partners may be considered “sharing” (and in some contexts a “sale”) under certain state privacy laws.
B. Sensitive Personal Information
Search history may qualify as sensitive personal information under some laws. ButterKnife provides controls that allow you to include or exclude specific sources/sites from collection and/or sale. Where required by applicable law, ButterKnife will also provide a method to limit certain uses and disclosures of sensitive personal information.
C. Exercising Your Rights
To exercise your rights, contact ButterKnife at privacy@butterknife.ai with the subject line “Privacy Request.” ButterKnife may need to verify your identity before processing your request. Depending on your location, you may be able to use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf.
D. Non-Discrimination
ButterKnife will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights. However, certain functionality (including Marketplace participation) may require certain data elements to operate.
E. Appeals (Where Required)
If your request is denied and your state law provides a right to appeal, you may appeal by contacting privacy@butterknife.ai with the subject line “Privacy Appeal.”
11) International Users (EEA/UK/Switzerland and Other Regions)
If you access the Digital Properties from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other jurisdictions where ButterKnife and its service providers operate.
If you are located in the EEA/UK/Switzerland, ButterKnife processes personal data under applicable data protection laws and may rely on legal bases such as:
- Performance of a contract (providing the service you request)
- Legitimate interests (e.g., security, fraud prevention, service improvement)
- Consent (where required, such as for certain cookies/ads)
Cross-border transfers: Where required, ButterKnife uses appropriate safeguards for international transfers (such as standard contractual clauses or other lawful mechanisms) and implements additional measures as needed.
12) Security
ButterKnife uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information. However, no security system is perfect and ButterKnife cannot guarantee absolute security.
13) Age Restriction
The Digital Properties are intended only for users 18 years and older. ButterKnife does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If ButterKnife learns that a minor has provided personal information, ButterKnife will take steps to delete it.
14) Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may revise this Privacy Policy periodically. If we make material changes, we will notify you as required by applicable law. The updated Privacy Policy will be posted on our website and within the Digital Properties with a revised “Effective Date.”
Your continued use of the Digital Properties after the effective date of the updated Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
